Our Story

Hey Family!

We are the Griffins. Shereka and I are USAF veterans who spent the majority of our careers stationed overseas, proudly serving our country. During our time off duty, we took every opportunity to travel across Asia and Europe, bringing our kids along for all the adventures.

When we were finally stationed back in the U.S., we realized how much had changed and that we needed some time to reacclimate. We started traveling throughout the country whenever we could, spending a lot of money on hotels. Eventually, we realized that with the amount of travel we were doing—both for work and leisure—we weren’t spending much time at home. That’s when we asked ourselves, “Wouldn’t it be nice to have our home with us wherever we go?”

On a trip to the Grand Canyon, we noticed a lot of RVs. The idea intrigued us, and soon after, ads and YouTube videos about RV life started popping up. We were hooked! But something felt missing. We rarely encountered other Black RV families or saw Black RVers at all. That’s when we said, “If not us, then who?” So, we decided to take a leap of faith and become pioneers!

In 2023, we bought our rig, Sojourner Truth, moved in, and haven’t looked back since. The transition to RV life was an interesting journey. Downsizing from a three-bedroom house to a three-room RV meant taking a hard look at all our stuff and letting go of things we didn’t need or hadn’t used in years. At the time, we were still on active duty, stationed in an area with harsh summers and brutally cold winters. We had to learn a lot very quickly, and yes, we made plenty of mistakes along the way. We overcome everything as a team and get better at exemplifying the motto “Semper Paratus”.

We’ve had close calls, unforgettable trials, and some incredible triumphs. But we wouldn’t change it for the world. RV life has given us the chance to see so many amazing places and meet people we never would have encountered otherwise. As a family, we’ve grown closer and gained a deeper understanding of America—both the beautiful and the ugly. We’ve enriched our knowledge of history by experiencing it from diverse perspectives. Along the way, we’ve reconnected with family and friends who’ve become like family to us.

We hope to meet you someday on Our Family Routes.
