Our National Parks Under Siege: A Call to Action for RVers and Travelers

Our National Parks Under Siege: A Call to Action for RVers and Travelers

The Crisis Facing Our National Parks

America’s National Parks—long celebrated as treasures of natural beauty and history—are under attack. From mass layoffs of park rangers to the looming threat of privatization, recent developments could forever alter the way we experience these iconic landscapes.

For RVers, campers, and outdoor lovers, these changes aren’t just policy decisions; they affect our ability to explore and enjoy the natural beauty of our country. Let’s break down the facts and why we must take action.

National Park Rangers Are Being Laid Off in Droves

🔥 What Does This Mean for Travelers?

  • Less Park Maintenance: Expect overflowing trash cans, neglected trails, and unsafe conditions.
  • Fewer Ranger-Led Programs: Educational experiences and guided hikes are being slashed.
  • Longer Response Times: Fewer rangers mean slower emergency response times for visitors.
  • Park Closures & Limited Hours: Some parks may partially close or reduce services.

Economic Impact: A Blow to Local Communities

Did you know that National Parks pump billions into local economies? In North Carolina alone, National Parks contributed $2.6 billion in 2023. With staff cuts and decreased tourism, businesses that rely on park visitors—like campgrounds, restaurants, and outfitters—could suffer huge losses. (Source: Axios)

The Threat of National Park Privatization

Beyond layoffs, a bigger threat is emerging—the potential sale of National Park lands to private developers.

A policy proposal known as “Project 2025” aims to transfer public lands to private ownership, opening the door to commercial development, resource extraction, and environmental destruction. (Source: StoryMaps)

What Could This Mean?

🚧 More Land Restrictions: Once sold, these lands could become off-limits to the public.
🏗️ Commercial Development: Luxury resorts, mining operations, and drilling could replace pristine landscapes.
🐾 Wildlife Endangerment: Many national parks protect fragile ecosystems that could be destroyed.

This is not just about politics—this is about preserving the places we love.

A History of Exclusion: National Parks and Segregation

It’s important to remember that National Parks haven’t always been accessible to all Americans.

During the Jim Crow era, Black travelers faced segregated facilities, restricted access, and outright exclusion from many National Parks. In some cases, Black visitors were denied entry altogether.

Even today, the legacy of segregation lingers. Many Black families, including ours, are rediscovering these spaces and claiming the freedom to explore our own country—something that was historically denied to our ancestors.

We must protect these lands not just for ourselves, but for future generations who deserve to enjoy them freely.

RVers & Travelers: Why This Matters to You

For full-time RV families like ours, National Parks are more than destinations—they’re part of our lifestyle. But if these attacks continue, our ability to camp, hike, and explore these lands will be severely limited.

The RV Community Speaks Out

“National Parks are our heritage. If we don’t stand up, they’ll be lost to corporate greed.” – John M., Full-Time RVer

“We travel to see America’s natural beauty, not parking lots and drilling sites.” – Lisa T., Van Lifer
