If you’re towing a travel trailer or fifth wheel, you’ve probably stumbled upon the age-old debate: gas or diesel truck for towing your RV?
There’s no shortage of opinions out there, with forums buzzing with arguments for both sides. Full-time RVer choose things that fit their lifestyles justst like the iPhone v Android debate. Having never towed anything like a 40ft Fifth Wheel, we wanted a truck that could not only pull the rig properly but all allowed me to drive with confidence.
We choose a diesel dually to pull our rig. Let’s dive into what helped us decide on one of the most important investments RVers who tow have to make.
We chose the the 2024 Chevy Silverado 3500 dually to tow our Grand Design Solitude 3470BH and for a couple of reasons.
Firstly, stability is paramount, and the dually setup of the Silverado ensures unparalleled steadiness on the road. With dual rear wheels providing a wider base, I have a better sense of control and assurance, particularly in challenging driving conditions like in areas with high winds.
As for power, navigating uphill terrains becomes effortless with the Silverado’s robust engine, delivering ample torque and horsepower for conquering steep inclines with ease. We’ve seen our Solitude being towed by other trucks where they struggled going up into the mountains if they made it at all.
Another reason we got the 3500 was its integrated exhaust brake system, which enhances safety and control when descending steep grades, reducing strain on the brakes. Colorado has some very well-known steep grades. Our truck handled it all with relative ease. Going downhill the exhaust brake really kicks in and almost stops you from going down which helps a ton with turns.
At the end of the day you want a truck that will provide you power, stability, safety, and confidence. There’s a lot of truck out there and they all do great jobs depending on what you’re towing. Choose wisely!
